This year’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) theme was “Emerald Crossing: An Irish Adventure Through Psalm 23.” By the opening day on August 17, over seventy children were enrolled, with more signing up throughout the week.

During the week, students learned the entire 23rd Psalm, focusing on a different verse every day. The daily schedule began with a time of singing in the Fellowship Lodge. Many of the songs directly quoted the 23rd Psalm, helping the youngsters memorize God's Word. Then, it was time for the “Creature Feature”: video clips showcasing an Irish animal that connected to the daily verse. For example, on the second day, the children learned about sheepdogs and how the Lord guides His people and keeps them safe.

After a morning welcome from Melissa Voreis, the VBS director, everyone headed to the Activity Center for crafts. These included Psalm 23 puzzles that students could color themselves, night-light Mod Podge jars, and decorated picture frames. Following crafts, everyone moved to the front lawn for games. Highlights there were the relay races, obstacle courses, and playing catch with water balloons. After burning off some energy, students moved to the outdoor patio for some much needed water and a delicious snack that fit with the day’s theme. One day the snack was carrot sticks, hummus, and pretzel rods to represent the Lord’s comforting rod (Psalm 23:4), and “overflowing” helpings of popcorn to represent cups that run over (Psalm 23:5).

Finally, it was time to move back into the Lodge for more singing and a lesson by Sister Melissa. She taught how each of the verses in Psalm 23 connect to the life of King David, and how the children could apply them to their own lives. The day concluded by watching a skit about a small farm in Ireland, with the overarching theme that the Lord guides His own and helps them when they trust and follow Him.

Many who attended VBS were from church families, but there were several visitors as well. It was an incredible opportunity for them to hear the Gospel message and for their families to learn about our church. Lord willing, we are praying for an even bigger turnout next year!
