“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” – Romans 15:4
Shortly after my husband and I were engaged, he had to leave town for two weeks because his employer was sending him halfway across the United States for training. This was a wonderful opportunity for him, and yet not such a happy thing for us as a couple. I missed him so much!
During those two weeks, my fiancé and I exchanged numerous letters and phone calls. We wrote each other every day, expressing our love and sharing personal things with one another, trying to keep communication open in spite of the distance. I kept every one of those letters, and now, several years later, they are a cherished possession. Those letters are not only a happy reminder of our young love that was just blossoming, but also a real insight into my husband’s character and personality.
There is another Friend whom I am separated from, at least in the physical sense. I met Jesus many years ago, and He has been a true and precious Friend. Although I cannot see Him physically walking by my side, or hear Him speak to me with an audible voice, He is near and we can have close communication every day.
Just as those precious letters from my fiancé kept his thoughts and feelings open to me, Jesus has also made His thoughts and feelings available. The Bible shares the life story of my Friend Jesus. It tells of the many wonderful things He has done, and describes His character and personality. Best of all, it has words directly from Jesus himself, expressing His thoughts, desires, and love for me! What a Book to cherish! Our separation is not forever—someday I will see Him in person. Meanwhile, we can keep the communication lines open!
