“Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith.” – Proverbs 15:16
Staring into a closet crammed with clothes, I felt dissatisfaction growing. I wanted certain colors—bright colors—to liven up my wardrobe! Then came the realization that I was unhappy with myself for not being content. Which side of me was going to win the tug-of-war?
With my birthday approaching, my husband sent me shopping with a modest amount of money. This was great! At last I could pick out something pretty in the color I was aching to wear. But after a long search though racks of brilliant garments, I still came home with a selection that proved to be a disappointment. Apparently shopping is not the cure for dissatisfaction with one’s wardrobe.
An age-old trick of Satan is to draw us into the snare of always desiring more than what we have. Yet, when we stop to think about it, wealth is only comparative. For millions of people in this world, each new day means another struggle to merely survive. To many of us, their standard of living is unimaginable! And likewise, they might be unable to conceive of possessing many of the material blessings we take for granted every day.
Despite the differences between the “poor” and “rich” of this present world, we all have some things in common. Yes, we can all be sucked into the trap of always wanting more; but we all can overcome Satan’s trap too. Anyone can become one of God’s most precious jewels, possessing a simple faith which cannot be measured in monetary terms. Those who serve God may or may not have material blessings, but they are blessed with hearts that are open to God’s Holy Word. Drawn by a hunger for the living God, they seek and discover true riches in a deep and lasting relationship with the Savior.
As our focus verse mentions, going after earthly possessions inherently invites trouble with the “treasure.” It can become easy to lose sight of the things that really count—one might even start to think that a boring closet is worth lamenting! May God help us to seek Him first. Then, we will find the Source of true satisfaction!
