By nature, some people are very concerned with safety. Some build high walls around their homes, buy several locks for their doors, or purchase alarm systems that will notify the police in the event of a break-in. Others worry about financial security. Individuals spend much effort trying to determine the profitability of certain stocks, CDs, and 401k retirement plans. Companies hire lawyers to protect their legal interests, and governments come together to discuss national security. The need for protection engulfs the whole world.

It is wise to take precautions in life as we are able, but our focus verse is a reminder of where true security comes from. We can take many steps to protect ourselves, yet ultimately our lives are in God’s hands. Someone once told me about a man who was traveling by bus, and as he was about to depart from the station, the Spirit of God told him to leave the bus and wait for the next one. This did not make sense to him, as he needed to be on time for a meeting. Nevertheless, he got off the bus. Later, he heard that the bus was in an accident and everyone on the bus was killed. He would have died also had God not protected his life.

As Christians, we can all look back to times when God stepped in and protected us, either from physical danger, financial problems, or some other threat. In all of these situations, the key is obedience. We have to listen when the Holy Spirit prompts us to action. And if we are living daily in obedience to His will, we can trust that He will protect us even from unseen dangers.  

God is not limited by the type of insurance we have, who our security company is, or how many stocks we own. We do our best to stay safe, but our sense of security is in knowing that God is in control of all things, and nothing will happen to us without His allowing it. We can all rest in the refuge and safety of His divine protection.
