Human beings are not born patient. Babies seem to exhibit the least amount of patience—I have seen a baby cry between bites of food because Mom was not fast enough with the spoon! On the other hand, that mother’s patience has surely been tested as well by her child, and will be again in the future. Some people lose their composure over something as trivial as a driver going too slow or too fast. Keeping calm in situations where we have little control is just not in our nature. Yet, as scarce as patience is in the world, God has made ample provision for Christians to have this important virtue.  

A look into the life of Job, a valiant soldier of God, shows the great value in patience. I have often wondered if Job could have gone through all he did if had he not been patient. He suffered physically, emotionally, and mentally through all kinds of attacks. He lost his children, his possessions, and then was afflicted with disease. His friends were like enemies, and even worse, his wife told him to curse God and die. But what did he do? He patiently waited on God. He said, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him” (Job 13:15). What great confidence he had! Job was confident because he had patience.

We need to have patience like Job. At times when we pray, God tells us to wait. That does not mean God is neglecting our prayer; that is our answer! The time between God telling us to wait and His finishing the work is difficult if we want the promise “right now!” But God does not always work “right now.” Although we may not see it, there is a reason for His timing, and we must wait for His perfect will. If we trust God, we will wait patiently.

Our focus verse exhorts us to be patient. Until when? Until the coming of the Lord. How long have you been waiting on God? Keep on waiting! God will fulfill His promises in our lives. It takes much effort to be patient, but it will make our Christian walks beautiful. May we not be weary, and may God help us to patiently wait on Him until Jesus returns.
