“For the Lord will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people.” – 1 Samuel 12:22
It has been almost thirty-four years since I joined the family of God and could call myself one of His people. When I received salvation, I had been saved before, but through discouragement, I had backslidden on several occasions. The last time, however, I purposed in my heart that if I made a mistake I would immediately go to the Lord and ask forgiveness. The purpose of my soul was to stay right with God. When I would hear people say they had been saved for one year, or five years, or longer, it seemed impossible that I could ever have such a testimony. Yet, this July will by my thirty-fourth spiritual birthday. I cannot take the credit for that—it is the Lord!
Today’s focus verse says that the Lord will never forsake His people, and I have witnessed that promise in my life in many ways. Not only did the Lord help me keep an honest heart over the last thirty-four years, but He has also carried me through the most difficult times in my life. Once I lost a child, and I was very fragile during the time that followed, but I remember how tenderly the Lord took care of me. He showed me that it is His pleasure to make us His people, and He takes care of His own.
By dying on the Cross, Jesus made a way for all of us to be called His people. What a great privilege that is! We can live in this present world without being a part of it, and we never have to go back to the old way of living. He will be with us in every situation we face, and will take pleasure in providing for us and giving us a testimony worthy of His name.
The wonderful blessing of being one of God’s people is available to everyone, but we must desire to be one of His. There is nothing that can separate us from Him, as long as we live in the way He has shown us in His Word. He will never forsake us; rather, He will bring joy and peace into our hearts, even in the hard times.
