“Let me fall now into the hand of the Lord; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.” – 1 Chronicles 21:13
Not long ago, two of our family’s electronic devices developed significant problems within an eight-day period. In both cases, the items were covered by extended warranties, so I assumed that the manufacturers would take care of the problems. That was not to be, however, because both claims were disallowed on technicalities.
As I pondered this, I thought about the difference there is in the way God handles matters as compared to human beings. Often, people are watching out for themselves and their concerns, or those of their companies. They may not follow through with their “guarantees.”
Now consider God. Knowing how desperately this lost world needed a Savior, He sent His Son to this sinful earth. He knew that the great majority of people would reject Jesus, but He sent Him anyway, to suffer and die that we might be saved. Clearly, mankind did not deserve such grace, but we are grateful that He did what was best for us. His mercy extended even to those who were cursing and reviling Him as He hung on the Cross, as He prayed on their behalf, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Truly, Jesus loved lost humanity and wanted to do all that He could for them. He guarantees us eternal life if we will serve Him.
In my personal life, long before I sought God, He sought me. He loved me so much that He kept knocking on my heart’s door, despite my life of sin. I am so glad He did! Because of that, I finally yielded my life to Him and discovered this joyous way to live.
Plenty of products come with warranties, but we know that man’s guarantees have limitations. God, on the other hand, offers everlasting life, and there is no reason to doubt Him. What a privilege we have to accept His assurance and give thanks!
