“But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.” – Luke 6:49
The ocean sparkled below the beautiful homes on the cape. The surf made a soothing melody as it touched the shore and rolled back into the sea. We first surveyed this growing cluster of luxury homes several years ago while on vacation, and could not imagine a more wonderful place to live.
Sadly, this seaside community is no longer drawing crowds for its beautiful view and magnificent handiwork, but rather to witness its destruction. The land beneath the cape has been suffering from erosion caused by stormy waves that pound into the cliff and pull dirt and clay from underneath the estates. Some wonder how this could have happened, and whether proper tests were done on the soil before home building began.
The scene reminds me that Christians, too, are builders. We are building spiritual houses that must last much longer than just this lifetime; our houses are for Heaven—our eternal home. It is very important to check the ground we are constructing our spiritual houses upon, because anything other than the Rock Jesus Christ is susceptible to erosion. There can be no gritty sin or soft pockets of false doctrine if we want our houses to stand firm, and we need to check often for signs of slippage. Our trust in God and obedience to His Word should not be wearing down, but growing stronger.
When we witness a home destroyed by erosion, we feel compassion for the owner. But how much worse it is when a spiritual house is built on the unstable shores of sin! If the Lord’s warning signs to move to a firm foundation are neglected, that house will fall prey to Satan’s assault. Eventually, its destruction will be total if the house is not rebuilt on the Rock of God. For this reason, we need to make sure that we are building our houses on the Lord Jesus Christ. If we are, we can be assured that our lodgings will be secure. All other ground, in the end, will experience destruction.
What kind of land are we building on? We can ask God to test it and prove whether it will withstand the storms of life. He will set us on the Rock, and help us build a house that will last forever.
