“And Naboth said to Ahab, The Lord forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.” – 1 Kings 21:3
A friend once told me about a time in the 1940s when he was looking for a house to buy. His realtor called and said he had found a nice house and that they should go look at it. When they arrived at the house, they went to the front door but no one was there, so they went to the back door and found it unlocked. The realtor took him into the house and, as they looked around, my friend asked, “Do they know we are here?” The realtor replied, “No.” My friend asked, “Is this place for sale?” The realtor said, “I don’t know.” So my friend said, “Let’s get out of here!”
Our focus verse comes from the account in the Bible where King Ahab asked to buy the vineyard of Naboth. The king offered him either a better vineyard or a monetary sum for the property, but Naboth refused both offers because it was stated in the Law that the inheritance was not to be sold (Leviticus 25:23). The king had made seemingly generous offers, but the property simply was not for sale.
There are times when the enemy would like to make people think that there is something better than the inheritance that we have in the Gospel. Some have sold their souls for the paltry things of this life, only to lose their reward. Others have found that sacrificing going to church in order to go after a better job, or pleasure, or another never-ending pursuit has robbed them of experiencing a close walk with God. An amazing career, power, popularity, and any other “offer” that Satan would exchange for our obedience to the Lord may seem generous, but we know that they are empty promises. Those trades would destroy our souls, which is why the Lord forbids us from making such sales.
It is important that we take down any “For Sale” signs that others may read in our lives, and put up one that says, “Not for Sale!” God will honor those who put Him first. “Buy the truth, and sell it not” is a wise saying and not one to be taken lightly.
