“Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” – Mark 9:24
Our focus verse is taken from a story in the Bible where a father brought his son, who was possessed of an evil spirit, to Jesus. The son’s condition was so severe that the disciples could not help him, but Jesus came on the scene and said to the father, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” The Bible records that the father immediately cried out with tears, saying, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” What a beautiful prayer that was! Jesus healed the man’s son.
This verse has a special place in my heart. The first time that it really caught my attention was at a Sunday evening service at our church. During the testimony service, an elderly man of God said that our focus verse had become his favorite Scripture to use when he needed something from God. I realized just how significant this portion of God’s Word is, and since then I have also loved it.
The wonderful thing about this verse is that it shows just how willing Jesus is to answer our prayers. Jesus said that anything is possible to him who believes, essentially giving us just one requirement to receive an answer from God: believe in Him. Jesus made it so simple, yet somehow we can struggle greatly with that single requirement. The good news, however, is that Jesus is even willing to help us believe! He not only gives us promises to stand on, but He helps us believe those promises and then performs the work—He does it all! Jesus truly carries the heavy end of the load.
As Christians, there will come times when our faith is tried. In spite of our belief in God, we can begin to feel like we are not getting anywhere. Prayers seem unanswered, and it looks as though we are losing touch with the promises of God. At such times, we can all cry out, “Lord, I believe; help thou my unbelief.” We know Jesus will be right there to help and lift us up. He did it for the man whose son had a dumb spirit, and He will do it for us too.
Is your faith wavering? Do you believe? You can ask the Lord for help today.
