“The Lord knoweth them that are his.” – 2 Timothy 2:19
While living in Seattle, Washington, my wife and I were asked to pick up at the airport some visitors from South Africa whom we had never met. It was a busy day at the terminal and hundreds of people were milling around. How we would ever find our guests was a subject of concern. However, our concerns were soon alleviated when we saw a man with a sign that read, “I am Beck.” Stating his identity so clearly made our work easy. Our quest was over.
In today’s society, many people face an identity crisis. They do not know who they are, why they are alive, or what their purpose in life is. This results in individuals wandering through life with no real direction. But perhaps something more important than knowing who we are is knowing whose we are. When an individual identifies with the Lord Jesus, he no longer has an identity crisis. Once he can confidently state, “I am Christ’s,” he knows who he is and that his purpose is to fulfill God’s will. The quest for meaning ends and the real adventure of serving the Lord begins.
While my wife and I could only recognize Mr. Beck by his sign, the Lord does not need a sign to indicate who belongs to Him. The Bible tells us that He knows them that are His. In fact, He knew all of us before we were even born, and He has a plan and purpose for each one. The need is for us to know that we are His. We do that by giving our hearts to Him and choosing to follow Him every day, and doing that is what will lead us to God’s perfect plan for our lives.
The blessings and advantages of identifying ourselves with the Lord Jesus are many, and one of those advantages is a life filled with purpose. We have a satisfying purpose in living to honor and glorify Him.
