“And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.” – Exodus 20:18
The black sky suddenly lit up, giving a soft purple glow to the eastern horizon as hot white bolts shot downward in jagged patterns. I was watching this amazing light show through my car window. The lightning was beautiful, but thankfully, it was also miles away! I have a healthy respect for this spectacular and powerful act of God.
As humans, we cannot fully understand the power God holds in His hands. Yet, as we watch in wonder at the things He does in the heavens and the earth, a reverence for Him builds. He can calm the raging storm in an instant, and He can rain brimstone and fire if He chooses. Honor and respect go hand in hand when we think on God and His awesome works.
If we are serving the Lord, our hearts well up in love and adoration toward Him when we see His power in action, and we hold Him in highest regard. It is important that we never fall into a pattern of disrespect—treating our relationship with Him as a light matter. When we come to God, we must come with a sincere respect for who He is and what He can do. Though we pray to Him constantly, it should never become a casual routine; we must always approach God with utmost reverence.
Commanding the forces of nature is only the beginning of God’s abilities; the mighty works He does in our hearts are much more worthy of our admiration. Even more than a thundering storm inspires awe, seeing His life-changing power should fill our hearts with veneration and reverence, as well as praise and thanksgiving.
How are we doing in the area of respect? Do we have honor and high respect for our Savior and Lord? He requires our total devotion and reverence, and that is what He deserves, for He is above all else, yet He cares deeply about you and me. Today, when we approach His throne, let us remember that we are communing with the God “who alone doeth great wonders” (Psalm 136:4).
