“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?” – Psalm 139:7
Children can play together at length, their imaginations taking them around the world, and be totally oblivious to their mother doing the laundry, making a grocery list, or preparing food at the kitchen sink. While their young minds wander, Mom could be saying, “Children, wash up for dinner,” or, “Pick up your toys,” and they would not notice her at all. They do not realize that mothers can be aware of each child’s behavior and ready to intervene in any serious situation.
However, when someone gets a scrape, or if someone is not “playing fair,” the whole atmosphere suddenly changes. Mom becomes the most important person in the world, and she is needed NOW! Only when the children need Mom do they realize that she is even in the room. Then they come to her frantically, looking to her as the great Problem Solver of the crisis that has just occurred.
Many times, we may be like children and forget that God is around until we need Him. We forget that He “dwells in the thick darkness,” until that darkness touches us. However, He knew us even as we were being formed in our mother’s womb, and He is aware of our downsittings and uprisings. God loves us with a love that we cannot comprehend, and is aware of our very thoughts as they pass through our minds. If we are saved, then we also know that He orders our steps. That means He not only knows where we are, but He is the One who put us here! And He is never more than a whispered prayer away.
The verses following our focus verse say, “If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.” God is always looking out for us. What a comfort to know that even when we are not consciously aware of His presence, God is with us.
