“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” – Deuteronomy 33:27
I trust in God, wherever I may be,
Upon the land or on the rolling sea,
For come what may, from day to day,
My heavenly Father watches over me.1
These beautiful words written by W. C. Martin came over the radio last Sunday as I sat at home feeling very worried and anxious. The next morning, I was scheduled to have a serious medical examination. As I listened to the soloist, I lifted my heart to God in prayer and He sent His Spirit right down to me. He was letting me know that if I put my trust in Him, He would be watching over me.
The chorus to that song says, “I trust in God, I know He cares for me, on mountain bleak or on the stormy sea. Though billows roll, He keeps my soul. My heavenly Father watches over me.” As I pondered these words, I thought about the important fact that as the billows roll, He is keeping my soul. What a comfort this was to me, because in the end, God keeping my soul is the most important thing in life. As I kept reaching out to God and praying, He did help me through the next few days of uncertainty.
Our focus verse says that “the eternal God is our refuge.” This means that the God who has been around forever is the One we can call on in our times of need. We can trust that in the thousands of years He has been dealing with mankind, He has seen our situation before and He knows how to see us through. The verse also says that “underneath are the everlasting arms”—this tells us that His strength and support have always been stable; He will not falter if we rely on Him. When we are weak or distressed, He is strong and able to deliver!
It is wonderful to be able to call on God anytime, anyplace. And the best part is that His offer is available to anyone who needs His help. What a gracious God we serve!
