“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28
A number of years ago, our eighteen-year old son had a tragic skiing accident, and the Lord called him Home. I am thankful that he was a Christian, and I know that he is in Heaven, but we did not expect his life to end so soon. Then, around six months after our son died, our home flooded and we had to move into our travel trailer. Once again, we were faced with a circumstance that we had not expected.
Despite these challenges, I am thankful that God is always in control, and that He has given us promises to see us through hard times. Our focus verse says that all things will work together for good if we love God and fulfill His purpose for our lives.
At the time, my wife and I could not see how anything good could come out of our son’s death or our flooded home, but as we continued to put our trust in God, we experienced His love, comfort, and strength in our time of need. In time, through our son’s accident, one of his best friends became a Christian, and today he is a chaplain at a Federal penitentiary in Texas. Our church family became a blessing to us in new ways as well. When our son died, they were right there to comfort and help us, and when our home flooded, they helped us move our belongings out of the house and clean up the mess. God also provided the funds for us to repair and rebuild our home. As I look back now, I can clearly see how the Lord helped us through such difficult circumstances, causing us to grow stronger spiritually and be more understanding of those with similar experiences.
We will all go through difficult situations that cause us to say, “This is not the way I planned for things to turn out.” Though some may wonder how anything good could come from such unwelcome times, Christians have a promise that God will work all things for good. If you are experiencing a tough situation and cannot comprehend anything positive coming out of it, let our focus verse be an encouragement to you. Ask the Lord to comfort and sustain you until you can look back and see how He has worked on your behalf.
