My father once told me a story about when he was a young boy hoeing strawberries. He said that as he was working, a lady walked by him singing, “Blessed Be the Name of the Lord.” There was something about that song that made him stop hoeing and turn aside. He knelt down and prayed, “Oh God, give to me what she has.” He said the peace of God came down into his soul and he knew that something had happened. Even though he was quite young, he recognized the fact that the “Name of the Lord” was something he needed in his heart.

As I thought about the “Name of the Lord,” I realized that Jesus has a name to satisfy every need we have. Our first and greatest need is to be saved from the bondage and penalty of sin, and for that we call upon our Savior and Redeemer. He earned the name of Savior when He died on the Cross and paid the debt of our sins, and everyone can call on Him for salvation.  

As we walk with the Lord, we find we need instruction in grace. For that we look to the Good Shepherd to lead us in “paths of righteousness.” When we are sick He is our Healer, and when we are alone He is our Friend. To the forsaken He is a Father, and to the hungry He is the Bread of Life. He is all we need!

Are you overwhelmed by life? Call on the Almighty to overcome any obstacle you face. Are you worried about a situation that is beyond your control? The Prince of Peace can bring calm in spite of your circumstances. Have you suffered the loss of a loved one and still feel that pain? The Comforter can give you joy. With an honest heart, we can all call upon the Name of the Lord for whatever our needs may be!

Here are just a few of the Lord’s names that you can call upon today: Alpha and Omega, Chief Cornerstone, Counselor, Deliverer, Door, Faithful Witness, Fountain of Living Water, Great High Priest, Guide, Judge, Just One, Lamb of God, Light of the World, Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Lord of All, Mighty God, Resurrection and Life, Rock, Shepherd and Bishop of Souls, Strength, Strong Tower, Teacher, Truth, Very Present help in trouble, Way, Wonderful.
