About a month ago, my family drove by an estate sale. The garage door was open, so we decided to check it out. We saw a very nice looking suitcase, and when we asked how much they wanted for it, they said it was only five dollars! We said, “We’ll take it.”  

We proceeded to look around and saw a few other items that caught our interest. However, as I walked about I started to get a funny feeling. I noticed that the other “shoppers” were putting price tags on items! As we made our purchases I looked at their sign, which said: “Estate Sale: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.” I got to thinking, This is Thursday! The sale had not begun yet!

My family benefitted from simply walking through an open door. We saw an opportunity and took it, and our boldness paid off. Similarly, God places an open door of opportunity before us. Our focus verse is part of the message that Jesus gave to the church at Philadelphia, but really it can be taken as Jesus’ message to anyone who is faithful and loyal to Him. Jesus said, “I have set before thee an open door”—an opportunity!  

The “key of David” referred to a man who was something like a Chief of Staff in David’s realm. He had the authority in matters of the kingdom. Doors that he shut were shut, and doors that he opened were open. In the spiritual realm, God has that authority. And He “opens up” many types of opportunities for us—opportunities for blessings, opportunities to witness and spread the Gospel, opportunities to follow His guidance for our lives, and more.

At the garage sale, we saw an open door and we saw treasures there—things that appealed to us. So we went through that open door and took advantage of the opportunity. As Christians, are we taking advantage of the doors God has placed before us? He gives them to all who are faithful. Let’s not miss an opportunity!
