“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
We live in a time when words are used to describe amounts of money such as a million, a billion or even a trillion dollars. To visualize these amounts, consider these figures:
A stack of $1,000 bills 4 inches high would make a million dollars.
A stack of $1,000 bills 300 feet high would make a billion dollars.
A stack of $1,000 bills 64 miles high would make a trillion dollars.
Such figures overwhelm us and possibly make us dizzy. Yet all of this money is just a medium of exchange for purchasing things that perish with use.
Our Heavenly Father has a storehouse of riches that far surpasses any amount of money we could visualize. He has infinite resources with which to help us. It is interesting to note that when the Apostle Paul was speaking to the saints at Philippi, he used the phrase “according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” He did not refer to His riches as a source for supplying our needs, but rather as a standard of measurement. That means that our needs will be supplied in the same way His riches are supplied—limitlessly and endlessly! The words “according to” speak of an infinite amount, an amount that cannot be calculated by any computer.
The first need He meets is a perfect example of His infinite ways. No man can calculate the price Jesus paid to redeem us from sin and give us the gift of eternal life. This gift is our greatest need, and it is given “according to” His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Because man is finite, the only way we can describe such an experience is to put limitations on our descriptions. When we receive the experience of salvation, we might say we have peace that “passeth all understanding,” or “joy unspeakable and full of glory,” because the experience is beyond our capabilities to express.
Salvation is only the beginning of the needs that God supplies. And for every gift that He gives, we find that He meets our needs in infinite and immeasurable ways. We want to be partakers and sharers of the “unsearchable riches of Christ” and the “exceeding riches of his grace.” These are the true riches, and to have them in our lives will glorify God.
