“Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.” – Isaiah 33:17
Recently during a lunch with my dad, I mentioned to him that our pastor and his wife were at that moment flying toward home at the close of a two-week international trip. I glanced at my watch and realized that if all the connecting flights had been made and the plane was on time, they had about three more hours in the air. Having experienced a few of those halfway-around-the-world flights myself, I could easily imagine the thoughts that were going through their minds: Only a few more hours! We’re almost home! I wonder who will be there to meet us? In those last hours of a long flight, it is hard to think about anything but the destination.
The feeling we have on a homeward-bound plane is how I feel about the fact that we are nearing our home in Heaven. Sometimes when I look at the events taking place in this world, my heart does a little skip. I think in anticipation, We’re almost there! It can’t be much longer before we reach the end of our spiritual journey!
My mind goes to those who will be waiting to greet me: my mom, who left us so suddenly. My grandparents, one of whom made his homeward journey before I was born. There are several dearly loved aunts and uncles who are already there, a precious friend, and many folks from our church family. What a reunion we will have. And best of all, I will finally see Jesus! As the prophet Isaiah foretold in our focus verse, my eyes will see the King in His beauty. I will arrive at that blessed land “that is very far off.”
What joyous anticipation should be in our hearts as we realize that we are in the last few hours of our journey. Soon we will be with Jesus forever. Today, let your heart rejoice in the fact that we are almost home!
