People do many things for excitement. In Norway, where I live, we have many mountains, and people come from all over the world to climb them. Sometimes they choose the steepest and most difficult way up. No doubt that gives them more excitement!

In order to climb, these mountaineers pound spikes into cracks in the rocks and hang on to them. I have seen pictures of people hanging hundreds of feet up on the mountainside. Sometimes they are carrying packs containing supplies, and perhaps even a bag to sleep in. This means a lot of weight rests on the support of those spikes. But they trust their equipment; they trust the spike’s design and strength.

It is rare, but from time to time we do hear of mountain climbers falling. Occasionally, a calculation goes wrong. Perhaps the spike is not driven in far enough to hold securely, or the rock cracks and gives way under the weight. Then the lives of the climbers and anyone who seeks to rescue them are all put in danger.

In our focus verse, the Bible describes a similar situation. While this verse is a prophetical passage related to the impermanence of national security, there is a clear message for our day as well. People all around us are looking for something to hang on to, something that will give them a sense of security as they travel through this life. Some trust in education, possessions, friends, or their own abilities. They calculate and believe that what they are supported by is good enough. But those who trust in anything other than Jesus Christ are certain to fall sooner or later.  

Today, let us thank God for the firm anchor for our souls that we have found in Jesus. How grateful we should be that we are not swinging from a support that will someday fail. We have a sure salvation that will see us through the rest of our lives, and on into eternity!
