“He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” – Psalm 126:6
She was so tiny, but she cried great tears as though her heart was broken. This two-year-old needed some extra attention, but her parents were busy loading up the moving van—packing away many of the treasures that she wanted to play with—so she became upset. Whenever this little girl cried, she looked for something to lean over and bury her face in, but there was nothing available to her at that moment. The couch was in the van, the chairs were stacked on the table in the van, and there was just nowhere to throw herself down. Finally, her mom noticed her distress, found an unpacked lawn chair, and called, “Come here, Sweetie.” She ran to the chair and burst into tears as she draped her little body over the seat. A place to cry was all she needed.
Sometimes, a place to cry is all we need, too. When we are burdened spiritually, we have to find a place where we can cry out to God and know that He hears us. Altars of prayer are a marvelous place to do just that. Years ago, nearly all Christian churches had altar benches at the front of their sanctuaries, and for those of us who still have them, it is a privilege to kneel and pour out our hearts to God. How many memories were created around those old benches? No one can know the number of prayers that have been answered there, as burdened souls prayed through to salvation or took problems to the Lord and left them there. Lifelong friendships have been cemented by sharing one sweet hour of prayer with a brother or a sister in Christ. And think of the many prayers yet to be answered!
God’s promises are claimed and fulfilled in holy places of prayer, whether at a church altar, in our homes, or somewhere else. And our focus verse promises that when we take our burdens to God in prayer, He will meet our needs in wonderful ways. The Psalmist also wrote, “The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles” (Psalm 34:17). Do you have a need right now? Are you in distress? Find a place to cry out to God, and He will hear you and deliver you.
