On many occasions as I was growing up, the children around our neighborhood would get together to play. Sometimes it was a game of dodge ball in our front yard—we had a nice corner lot. Other times, there were water fights with water balloons, buckets, or even the garden hose! For games of hide-and-seek, we would spread across the neighborhood and sometimes have to run halfway down the block to “home base.” For one variation of the game, those hiding did not necessarily wait to be found, but rather would jump out as the seeker drew near and then race back to home base. Another variation called for only one person to hide and everyone else to seek; when each seeker found the hiding spot, he would hide there too, until the last person seeking found the whole group all hiding together!

Many childish games include some kind of hiding, usually with the purpose of being found. As we grow up, however, that idea seems to reverse. We may find a desire to hide from people or situations and to not be found—sometimes we just need a break!

There is a hiding place where we can go just for that purpose; a place where we are safe from the cares of the world and where we can find true rest. That place is at the feet of Jesus. When we bring our cares to Him, He will give us peace in our souls and rest from our burdens. There is no greater peace than the peace that Jesus gives! Even if the troubles of the world continue to rage around us, He shelters and calms us, and prepares us to go back into the world and face any situation that may confront us. Hiding in Jesus gives us rest, and also needed strength. Let’s remember to take advantage of this precious hiding place daily!
