TEXT: Matthew 15:21-28

This mother’s love for her daughter would not allow her to give up.

The day you were born was just an ordinary day for most of the people in the world. Life went on as usual. The sun rose and set. People went to school and work, and busied themselves with the ordinary business of life. But for one person at least, that day was different.

To your mother that day was very special. She had waited a long time for you! When you finally came into the world she was so happy. You made that day an outstanding day in her life. When God gave you to your mother, He was giving her a very special gift.

When God gave us to our parents He also gave them a big responsibility—to teach us right from wrong. It is their duty to teach us about God, and that we are born into this world so we can serve Him. Christian parents want us to love God and to be the kind of person that God wants us to be. That is why they praise us when we do well, and discipline us when we do wrong. They want us to learn to be obedient.

In our lesson, we read about a mother who had a daughter she loved very much. But the Bible says this girl had an evil spirit in her. This made her mother really sad.

Someone must have told her about Jesus, and what He could do for her daughter. When Jesus came into her city, she followed after Him and cried out, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David.” She told Jesus about her daughter and the evil spirit that was in her.

At first Jesus didn’t say a word to her, but she kept following Him and crying out to Him for help. She knew that Jesus was the only One who could help her daughter, so she kept pleading for His help. She wanted her daughter to be well.

Finally Jesus answered her and said, “O woman, great is thy faith.” Jesus had heard her cry and He could feel the love she had for her daughter. From that very hour her daughter was well. When she returned home she no doubt told her daughter all about Jesus and how He was the One who had made her well. The daughter must surely have thanked her mother over and over again for finding Jesus and following Him until He answered her prayer. This mother found the key for living a good life when she found Jesus. She passed it on to her daughter, and their lives were never the same again.

Christian parents want the same for their children today. Sunday school and family devotions are important parts in helping a child find Jesus.

We set aside one day a year to make a special point of telling our mothers how much we love them, and how much we appreciate everything they have done for us. Throughout the year, we should remember to say thank you when they have done something for us. But on this day we take time to give our mothers extra thanks for all the things that they have done for us. When we honor our mothers in this way, we are obeying God’s Word. In Ephesians 6:2-3, we read, “Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” To honor means to show respect by being obedient and courteous. We must obey and respect our mothers every day to please God.

If we learn, when we are young, to love and honor our parents, it will help us learn how to love and honor God. To love God is the most important thing in our lives. Our parents can tell us about Jesus when we are young, but we must make our own choice for Him.

The best way to honor our parents is to ask Jesus to come into our hearts and take the sin out. Many people have given their hearts to Jesus on Mother’s Day. It is the best Mother’s Day present anyone could ever give to his mother. Can you think of a better way to say, “Thanks, Mom”?
