“For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.” – 1 Samuel 30:24
One Saturday, a sister in our church asked me to go fishing with her. That sounded good to me, so we went down on the Willamette River. After we had been on the water awhile, she hooked a huge salmon. She started to wrestle to bring the fish in, but the wind came up and began to blow us toward the pilings where there used to be a dock—it looked like our boat was sure to crash. Just as disaster appeared imminent, she dropped her pole by her feet and opened the throttle on the motor as wide as it would go. After that, the Lord took over. I have no idea how we missed those pilings, but we did. Then, when we reached the middle of the river, she picked up her pole and that salmon was still on her line—after all of that, she still made the catch!
When we returned to her house, she divided up the salmon and gave half to me. I told her that because we had used her boat and she was the one who had caught the fish, I did not deserve half; I would be content with just a few pieces for my family. However, she insisted that she wanted me to share equally in the catch even though she had done most of the work.
Have you ever felt that you are not doing much in your service for the Lord? Maybe you look at those who are missionaries, talented musicians, preachers, or Sunday school teachers, and wonder what you could do with the talents God has given you. As Christians, God requires two things of us: to do what we can, and to be faithful in doing it. In our focus verse, David told those who had done the physical fighting to share the spoil from the battle equally with those who had stayed behind with the stuff. After all, they had enabled the soldiers to continue in the battle until the victory was won. David said that because all of them had done what they could, they would all get the same reward.
What is the Lord calling you to do? Many times, He just asks small things of us. Maybe He will nudge you to give your testimony, encourage somebody, reach out to a person who is going through a hard time, or pray for someone the Lord lays on your heart. These may seem like little things, but little things add up and bring lasting results.
As we go through this day, why don’t we look for those little things we can do to make a difference and encourage someone along the way?
