“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” – John 14:2
Tables set with crisp white cloths, sparkling plates, and crystal goblets reflected off the windows of the restaurant. The Willamette River flowed quietly at a distance. Soft music drifted through the air, soothing away cares brought in from the outside. Candles flickered a welcome among the dainty vases of flowers adorning the tables. Large glass chandeliers, dimly set, reminded me of mansions I had visited in Europe. Voices were kept to a low murmur. Everything seemed elegant and perfect.
My friend and I feasted our eyes on the total beauty and richness of our surroundings. What a wonderful place to celebrate our birthdays! Here we felt like royalty. A member of a royal family could not have felt more cared for than we did at that moment. I may not visit that lovely place again, but the elegance and splendor of the evening will be with me for a long time.
We may dream at times throughout our lives of living like a king or queen, having a mansion, being waited on hand and foot, and never doing labor again, but it can only be a dream. Someday, however, those who love God and are serving Him with all their hearts will be led before the King of Heaven and earth. There, we will be handed the deed to a mansion prepared especially for us by the Lord himself. Labors will be past, food will be perfection itself, and the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, our Savior, will serve us. Heavenly music will fill the air and the cares of earth will vanish forever. The Bible tells us that we cannot even imagine how magnificent it will be!
My wonderful evening of elegance and dining, though superb in every way, can never measure up to what the Lord has in store for those who love Him. We are the children of the King and His delight will be in giving us all the riches of Heaven and eternal life with Him. Are we longing for a palace over yonder? May we keep our eternal home in mind throughout the day as we choose to live in a way that will store up treasure over there.
