“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
This past year, my husband and I had the delightful experience of becoming first-time grandparents when two little boys joined our family just a couple of months apart. Having them around has reminded us of some basic principles about babies. For example, we have recalled that from a baby’s very first breath, he begins to express his needs. When our grandsons were just a few days old, we could tell when they were getting hungry because they would start getting restless and fussy. Of course, their needs were met as quickly as possible!
Our little guys are growing up quickly (actually, much too quickly!) and we have observed how their needs have changed and developed over the past months. As human beings grow beyond the baby stage, our complex nature requires more than just the gratification of physical needs. We become aware of a need for love and security. Later, there will be a desire for acceptance, for satisfaction, for inner peace. The desire to have these needs fulfilled becomes a predominant drive in human nature. Sadly, many people try all sorts of unsuccessful avenues to satisfy themselves: education, career, money, or even drugs, alcohol, illicit sex, etc. However, there is only one true source—our focus verse says that God will supply all our needs.
Have you ever faced a situation where you felt helpless to provide what was needed? Perhaps you were tending to a sick child or trying to comfort a grieving friend. When faced with these situations, we are often limited in the ways that we can help, but God has no such limits.
God is interested and available to meet the needs of each one of us, no matter who or where we are. God is very personal and no one is overlooked by Him—He will meet your needs, too. And God does not hand out generic blessings. He does not decide that today is the day to provide courage for everyone! No, what He sends to meet our needs will be especially tailor-made for us and the situation we are in at the moment.
There may be times when what we think we need may not really be good for us. It is important to remember that God meets our needs, not necessarily our wants. True happiness is based on God’s control of the circumstances of our lives. As our trust is anchored in Him, He truly will meet our needs in the manner that He knows is best for us.
Today, let’s take a moment to consider some of the ways God meets our needs on a daily basis. Then, let’s be sure to thank Him for His gracious provision!
