After extensive preparations, the highly anticipated opening day of the 67th annual convention in Jamaica arrived on Sunday, July 20. Saints from across Jamaica gathered, eager for a week filled with worship, anticipating that as praises rose, blessings would surely come down—and they did.

The opening service began with congregational singing. The presence of the Lord was felt deeply as the assembly was led through a series of uplifting choruses such as “I Have Another Home in View” and “I’m Too Near to My Home.” A special moment was when the combined choirs of the represented churches marched in singing “He Has Done Marvelous Things.” Once they were seated, Marcia Chong of Kingston encouraged everyone to offer sincere praise while singing the next song, “We Bring the Sacrifice of Praise.” Rohan Clough, the Jamaica District Superintendent, officially opened the convention by welcoming everyone. The theme for this year’s convention, “Thy Kingdom Come,” was reflected in the choir’s performance of “Kingdom,” which was offered before the congregation was led in prayer.

During the announcements, it was stated that Ed Habre, of the Portland headquarters, had been appointed as Director of Jamaica Work. Also, Shelia Ricketts retired after pastoring the Albert Town church for thirty-five years. She briefly spoke to the congregation, expressing gratitude for being “Kingdom material.” In addition, she urged everyone to examine their hearts and ensure readiness for Heaven. Two other pastors spoke also. Shawn Barrett of Christiana said he was glad to be part of God’s eternal Kingdom, and Gloria Nelson of Kingston encouraged everyone to seek the fire of the Lord and maintain daily habits of worship.

As the service continued, the congregation sang “Until Then” and the Scripture reading was given from Matthew 6:1-13, which includes the Lord’s Prayer. Then the choir’s rendition of “Hallelujah, Salvation and Glory” set the tone for the message. Brother Rohan expounded on the convention theme, emphasizing that Jesus came to earth not to establish a physical kingdom but to reign in people’s hearts. However, He will one day return with His people to rule the earth for a millennium.

Throughout the remainder of the week, each morning service highlighted a different group of people. Monday was “Men’s Day” and featured an all-male choir. The message was delivered by Adrian Francis of Castleton on “Characteristics of the Church as the Kingdom.” In the evening, a presentation was given by the National Insurance Scheme of Jamaica, offering valuable information to all attendees. Tuesday was “Youth Day.” The national youth choir provided the music and then Tashana Brown encouraged everyone with a message on “Overcoming Temptation.”

Wednesday was “Ladies’ Day,” and the national ladies’ choir brought an atmosphere of praise before Sharon McKenzie, the pastor at Croft’s Hill, spoke on the topic of “Forgiveness: The Weapon of Restoration.” Thursday was “Sunday School Day” with a theme of “God Our Provider.” During the hour, many students received prizes and surprises for their achievements throughout the year.

The week concluded on Sunday, July 27, with messages from Pastor Albert Brown of Spanish Town and Brother Rohan. Afterward, everyone left for their homes, thankful for a glorious convention and the abundant blessings received from God during the week.
