Morning Glories

Every summer, morning glories bloom in profusion outside my bedroom window. I never tire of waking up to their brilliant blue faces reaching toward the light. In the hot afternoon, the sun beats on them and they shrivel up until they look like little crumpled wads of tissue paper. Each day new flowers bloom and then die. Their glory is brief, but oh, what splendor these morning glories display!

As I watch the fleeting life cycle of a morning glory, I am reminded of our focus verse and of how short a human life truly is. On the timeline of eternity, the longest life ever (Methuselah’s) is just a tiny dot. If his lifespan of over 900 years is so small, how very insignificant our threescore and ten is!

Over and over in Scripture we are reminded of the brevity of life, but it seems difficult for us to grasp, especially when we are young.

It is so important that we live our lives for that which matters, but what is that? What are the things that will last forever? Well, we can eliminate every single thing that we can see: our homes, our bodies, our money, the mountains, the world, and in fact, the entire universe. They are all temporary. So, if everything we see is eliminated, all that is left is what we cannot see: God’s love (Oh, how we should praise Him), souls (How glorious to win a soul for Christ), God’s eternal Word (His Word provides perfect light to help us walk with Him). These are what will last forever. These are the things we should be investing our short life in.

Dear Lord, Today, help me to invest my time wisely. Help me use my life for things that will last forever. Amen.
