Life on the Edge: A Young Adult's Guide to a Meaningful Future

Author: Dr. James Dobson
ISBN: 1590523865
Reviewer: Charnicia Huggins

This book offers straight talk about dating, marriage,
choosing a college, getting along with parents and many other issues that readers may confront during he "critical decade," ages 16 to 26. It is written in a conversational style, offering practical advice from a Christian perspective on topics ranging from the various stages of intimacy -- i.e. "how far should you go with a date/boyfriend?" -- to how to continue trusting God during intense suffering and other inexplicable circumstances.

Several chapters include a Q&A format where the author answers questions posed by teenagers and young adults about how to deal with their insecurities, protect themselves from marital infidelity, setting and achieving goals, etc.

In the final chapter, Dobson explains that the only way to find the meaning of life is to go through the source, Jesus Christ. He ends with a vivid description of the importance of having a relationship with Jesus and urges his readers to "be there" on resurrection morning.

NOTE: Despite the author's targeted age range, this book is a great read for teens and young adults of all ages.

A Right Conception of Sin

Author: Richard Taylor
ISBN: 0834101394
Reviewer: Earl Phillips

I prize this book as one of the best in my library. I would recommend it to all Christians. You hear people ask so often, "Just what is sin?" This book covers it. Sections include: Sin and Theology, Sin and Calvinism, The Atonement and the Nature of Man, The Atonement and a Sinning Religion, What is the Act of Sin, etc. This book was so helpful to me when I first started my ministry. I believe this book is a must read. It comes in paperback.

Stepping Heavenward: One Woman's Journey to Godliness

Author: Elizabeth Prentiss
ISBN: 1577483421
Reviewer: Trina Paulsen

The diary of Elizabeth Prentiss, a nineteenth century girl, is a narrative on growing in grace as well as simply growing up. In a delightful down-to-earth style, Prentiss expresses the emotions of a young woman striving for spiritual perfection but facing human weakness. Although Prentiss comes from a Calvinistic background, her references to "sin" in her life are, for the most part, simply definitional differences and what we in the Apostolic Faith Church would consider "mistakes." An easy read, but filled with profound thoughts and applications, this book is of particular interest to young women, although the concepts are universal to all Christians.

Oregon Wedding

Author: Cher L. Tom
ISBN: 192860269X
Reviewer: Barbara Sletmoe

I loved this book. This is a fiction book, which falls in the Historical Inspirational category. The setting is in the Applegate Valley at Williamsburg (now called Williams), which is located near Grants Pass, Oregon. The characters are "real" in the sense that you can identify with them. The author included some people who actually lived in the area at the time the story took place. She grew up in the area and knows its history and people, so details are accurate.

Summer Promise

Author: Robin Jones Gunn
ISBN: 1561795976
Reviewer: Lisa Norene

In this first book of The Christy Miller Series, fourteen-year-old, Christy leaves her Wisconsin farm to visit her aunt and uncle in California for the summer. Before leaving, her parents make her promise not to do anything she'll regret. Determined to keep that promise, Christy encounters situations facing many teens today, from dating, popularity issues, and parties, to the death of a friend.

Throughout the book, the reader follows Christy as she questions the purpose of life, and begins to wonder about God's presence in her life. Under the influence of Christian and non-Christian friends, Christy must decide the path she desires to take.

While mostly geared toward a female audience, Robin Jones-Gunn has tied in several situations that all teenage readers would be able to relate with. The entire Christy Miller Series, a Focus on the Family collection, features this character's continual spiritual growth as she goes through high school, college and beyond.

Teenage girls will be able to enjoy the antics of the down-to-earth, "normal" teenager, Christy, as well as learn how to victoriously handle situations that come their way in school and life in general.

Passion and Purity: Learning to Bring Your Life Under Christ's Control

Author: Elisabeth Elliot
ISBN: 0800758188
Reviewer: Karen Barrett

I would put the book "Passion and Purity" right at the top of the list of Christian books on dating. Based on her own five-year courtship with Jim Elliot, the author shares a heart-touching and very personal account of what it means to follow Christ in the midst of heartache and impatience. If you want to read about a real life experience of a couple keeping themselves pure before God, this is an awesome book! Its message is an inspiration in an age when doing whatever "feels right" is common practice. Elliot's message challenges all of us, no matter what stage of life we are in, to a true faith in a Christ who lovingly calls us to surrender everything to Him.

Quest for Love: True Stories of Passion and Purity

Author: Elisabeth Elliot
ISBN: 0800758218
Reviewer: Karen Barrett

Are you contemplating marriage? Are you wondering what will happen if you let God choose your life partner? If so, then this book is a "must read."

In this sequel to her book "Passion and Purity," Elliot dusts off "antiquated" concepts such as commitment, integrity, honor, and servanthood, and applies them to the world of dating and singleness. She approaches these topics from a Biblical perspective, using true stories as the basis for her key point: the vital importance of bringing your love life under the authority of Jesus Christ. Her warmth and humor make this book one that is hard to put down! I especially liked the fact that each chapter concludes with some points to reflect upon. You will be challenged and inspired by this book!
