First Aid for a Wounded Marriage

Author: Marilyn Phillipps
ISBN: 1884794009
Reviewer: Rebecca Manyadze

A wife wants more than anything to share God's love with
her husband. But the more she tries to share it, the more he resists. He is resisting the gospel, but she feels that he is rejecting her. If she is unaware of the enemy's deceptions, the wife of an unbeliever is wide open for the first opportunist who happens along. Read this book and
you will agree with me that God will take part in repairing your wounded marriage.

I Hate Whining, Except When I'm Doing It ...And Other Lessons Learned at My Children's Knees

Author: Sheila Rabe
ISBN: 087509645X
Reviewer: Kathleen Mixer-Cantrell

Just reading the title gave me a laugh! I found the short chapters easy to manage for this mom, with little time for pleasure reading.

A few of the topics include time management (and lack thereof!), social interaction (gossip!), and economics...I found myself alternately thinking, "I knew that!" or "Ouch!"

Presented in a humorous straight-forward manner, and supplemented by Scripture (KJV), I recommend this book for the busy mom in your life!

Elbows Off the Table, Napkin in the Lap, No Video Games During Dinner

Author: Carol McD. Wallace
ISBN: 031214122X
Reviewer: Connie Smith

I wish I would have discovered this book years ago to formulate a no-miss list for all the basic rules concerning good manners at home and in public that are so important to get across while your children are still young. The author breaks down guidelines for ages three to five, six to nine, and seven to twelve, covering all kinds of subjects from the obvious such as table manners, meeting adults, thank you notes, etc., to less obvious, such as hospital visits, party manners, play dates, etc. This is definitely a great resource!

The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate

Author: Gary Chapman
ISBN: 1881273156
Reviewer: Ruth Sprague

I usually believe that most self-help books never really apply to me, and, as a result, even though I read them, they don't resonate. This one did, and I was surprised.

The author examines the love languages of people, showing how speaking a “different language” than your mate could lead to misunderstanding. One person might think that giving gifts is an act of love, while another believes in the power of touch and really isn't into gift giving. (Sorry to all who are in love with gifts at Christmastime!) As a result, miscommunication and misunderstanding can occur. This books plows through all of it.
What impressed me is that fact that the author is a Christian, and is really good at this, not generalizing too much about the sexes. I was pleasantly surprised.

Tender Warrior

Author: Stu Weber
ISBN: 1576733068
Reviewer: Al Friesen

This book answers the question: "What is a real man?" It is a good tool for informing a man of his responsibilities to God, his wife, children and friends. Under a man's hard shell there must be a tender heart. The example of a wagon train scout is used to depict how a man should be a guide for his family spiritually as well as physically. It is informative, interesting and easy reading.

His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage

Author: William F. Harley, Jr.
ISBN: 0800717880
Reviewer: Gordon Sletmoe

There are countless jokes about the differences between men and women. And although there is a grain of truth in many of these jokes, they are not very helpful in solving real marital issues. Although not specifically a religious book, "His Needs, Her Needs" is wholesome, well-written, and consistent with Christian values. If a husband and wife both read this book, then discuss the issues contained therein, and act upon them, even good marriages will be made better.

In this work, the author identifies the top five things a typical wife expects from her marriage, and shows how they differ from the top five expectations of a typical husband. When these expectations are not met, the Devil has an inroad into breaking up the relationship. And as he points out, this is happening with increased frequency even in the fundamental church. Perhaps equally serious are the number of marriages in the fundamental church, which although still in tact, are cold, practical affairs: far different from what the couple expected as newlyweds.

In many cases, wives are more articulate in pointing out what is wrong with their husbands (all he wants is this, whereas I want that) than vice versa. It might come as a shock to these wives that the husband has his share of unfulfilled needs—even if he isn't very good at expressing them. In working through the book, each can learn a little more about the other. With a little loving give-and-take, the couple are well on their way to a happier, more fulfilled relationship.

Answers to Your Kids' Questions

Author: Chuck Colson with Harold Fickett
ISBN: 0842318178
Reviewer: Amy Scholes

Whether you have teenagers at home or teach them in church, you need this book.

Part of his excellent series "How Now Shall We Live?", this powerful resource presents questions teenagers typically encounter in school or from their friends, and gives you answers from the Bible and from biblical principles.

Why doesn't God show himself more clearly? Did God create evil? Is it possible that evolution and creation are both true? What happens to people who die without ever hearing about Christ? How can I know God's will for my life? Why should I wait to have sex until I'm married? I like to watch slash-'em-up movies. What's wrong with that?

Answers are given to these kinds of questions and more, including subjects such as abortion, genetic engineering, and the right to die.

Use this book as a reference tool when questions arise, read it through topic by topic to gain better understanding, or use it to create your own Bible studies on contemporary issues.

Women Leaving the Work Place

Author: Larry Burkett
ISBN: 0802491618
Reviewer: Michelle Hancock

This is a great resource for any family trying to figure out a way for the wife to stay home. Although it is not a quick-fix type of strategy, I believe it can work.

My mom gave me this book several years ago. The concept of staying home seemed an impossibility, but now I work from home! Some of the ideas in this book are definitely on the right track.

Topics include:
• Preparing to live on one income
• Developing and sticking to a budget
• Creating income from home
• Being willing to make sacrifices
• Homeschooling
• Tips from stay-at-home moms

I would consider this a "must-read" for anyone heading in this direction.

Till Death Do Us Part

Author: Joseph A, Webb
ISBN: 0963222635
Reviewer: Carrie Elgin

I heard the author, Joseph Webb, on a radio talk show a few years ago and was amazed at the boldness and authority with which he answered questions from the radio audience about divorce and remarriage. The book covers God's original plan for marriage, God's view of divorce, the early church's view, the so-called "exceptions" to God's true plan, and many other points. Every statement is backed with Scripture and a thorough explanation. If you ever need to give an answer to a question on these subjects, this is a very helpful reference book. By the way, the people calling into the radio station were getting pretty mad, but Mr. Webb very calmly gave an answer for every question saying over and over again, "I am only telling you what the Bible says."

Let Me Be a Woman

Author: Elizabeth Elliot
ISBN: 0842321624
Reviewer: Karen Barrett

Elizabeth Elliot is one of my favorite Christian authors, and this book is another thought-provoking and inspirational winner. Written for her daughter, it is full of insights regarding what it means to be a Christian woman. In a number of short chapters, the writer explains how our role is different from and supportive to the role He has designed for men. The Biblical values she presents are not always applauded by today's society, but I found it refreshing and challenging to see them so clearly delineated. She brings out the importance and privilege of Biblical femininity, underlining the fact that both sexes are equally precious in God's eyes, but that God made us different for a reason!

You Can Raise a Well-Mannered Child

Author: June Hines Moore
ISBN: 0805460764
Reviewer: Rodica Musgrave

This book is about how to teach children manners as a heartfelt response of kindness and consideration rather than a long list of do's and don'ts. It emphasizes the need to model the behavior and motivate rather than manipulate them as a "manners police." If you are not sure as a parent what manners should be taught your child at certain ages, this book includes realistic age-appropriate goals. It's also a great reference tool for parents who may want a refresher course themselves!

The Strong-Willed Child: Birth Through Adolescence

Author: Dr. James Dobson
ISBN: 084236661X
Reviewer: Rodica Musgrave

If you have a naturally compliant child, you probably will not need to read this book. However, if you have been blessed with one who is less cooperative and has a tendency to want to run things and test your limits, this book offers you insight on how to best parent that child. The main running thought throughout the book is to shape the will of the child without breaking his/her spirit. It is a great "how-to" book.

When the Serpent Speaks to Kids

Author: Dr. James Brooks
ISBN: 158169072X
Reviewer: Nicole D. Brooks

The persuasive, deceptive voice of the serpent [Satan] is the reason why children embrace rebellion, crime, immorality, corruption, and death, according to Dr. James Brooks. While wrong choices, hopelessness, fear, and parents refusing to turn to God hinder deliverance, Dr. Brooks identifies a doctrine of ethical and moral relativism in American culture that adds to the crisis because it excuses all sorts of sins as normal behavior.

The book is a wake-up call for parents who have allowed the serpent to keep their children in bondage for lack of spiritual discernment needed to set them free. It provides guidelines in finding the way out of life's deceptive maze through the enabling power of the Holy Spirit. It promises spiritual results if we focus on Jesus, the life-giver, rather than on the serpent, the father of lies. And it provides pertinent information for all of us who must help children win the victory over the tempter's snare.

Be sure to read the entire book, for each chapter is filled with a no-nonsense, pull-no-punches style that takes on some of the most heartrending moral dilemmas of our time. At the conclusion, Dr. Brooks makes the claim that the greatest resources for pulling our children out of sin infestation are strong, dedicated Christ-like believers who are willing to tear down all walls and step over every boundary in an effort to form a sacred community-a community that is rooted and grounded in the Word of God and committed to taking back the neighborhood, the streets, and the stolen young souls that are sentenced to die.

Spiritual Parenting

Author: C.H. Spurgeon
ISBN: 0883682656
Reviewer: Mike Friesen

Mr. Spurgeon gives an excellent guide that follows two parallel tracks: parenting and Sunday school teaching. He uses a number of Scripture references and examples.
Some of his main points include the following:

• Children are more capable of understanding spiritual truth than we give them credit.
• It is infinitely better to nurture a child's spiritual development than play skeptic.
• Spurgeon found it easier to believe the conversion of a child than of an adult
• A converted child is still a child - do not expect the child to suddenly become an elder.
• He felt that one of the highest callings is ministering to children.
• Every teaching or every sermon must feed the lambs and not just harp on platitudes (e.g. What does "just believe" mean?).
• Solid character results from getting the Word of God in the heart.
• Instruct the little ones in the necessity of prayer.
• Teach godliness, God sees all and the evil of sin.
• The heart of a child is large and, if cultivated, will show conspicuous love.
• Above all, work over time for the ultimate conversion of childrens' souls.
