Vienna Prelude

Author: Bodie and Brock Thoene
ISBN: 1414301073
Reviewer: Kerrin

Do you like historical fiction? Than this book, and the whole "Zion Covenant" series is just for you. If you are not already familiar with the works of Bodie and Brock Thoene than you are in for a treat. Their books are a far cry from the typical, fluffy, Christian fiction of today. You will learn so much as you are transported back to a time in history that rocked our world.

As "Vienna Prelude" opens you find yourself in Austria in the year 1936.

Meet the blond Elisa Lindheim, a violinist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who adopts an Aryan stage name for protection. All seems right in the world, until Nazi darkness descends upon Europe. There are those who chose to fight Hitler's madness: Elisa's father, Theo. A courageous American reporter, John Murphy. Winston Churchill, the British statesman. A farming family in the Tyrolean Alps. The Jewish underground. But who can stop the tide of impending darkness? No one is who they say and nothing is what it seems as swastikas begin to cover Europe. Spies and secrets lurk behind every corner. What does the violin case really carry and will books reveal more than what is merely typed on their pages? As Elisa struggles to save a few, can her closest friend, Leah, a talented Jewish cellist, escape in time? Is it possible for true love to live in such a time as this? The clock is running out for those whom the Nazis consider enemies of the state and the third Reich. No one is safe as all find out that there is no middle ground.

You will see the wonderful way our Lord worked through history and how He is still working today. The "Zion Covenant" series continues for a total of nine books. They also include study questions, perfect for individual use or group discussion. In my opinion, these books are historical fiction at its best. They not only combine extremely accurate historical facts and descriptions, but extremely captivating fictional ones as well. The memories of WWII are fading fast but the things we can learn from that time grow more important. You will be hooked as you follow the lives of these unforgettable characters. The Thoene's motto rings true as you, "Discover the Truth Through Fiction."

Reviewer: Elizabeth Lasinski

The story found within this intriguing cover is powerful. Emily Blyton is a sought-after artisan in the mountain town of Murray, Colorado, who knows from painful experience how to go it alone in life.

A shocking discovery from her past (I don't want to give too much away here)threatens everything Emily has ever known about herself and sends her across the country to find healing and a new identity in Christ. It's a beautiful and tender story that brought me to tears more than once. This one is destined to touch many people on many levels.

Aggie's Journey

Author: Cher L. Tom
ISBN: 1928602991
Reviewer: Ann Winterholter

When Cher L. Tom was doing some research as a student at the University of Oregon, she ran across some information about the underground tunnels in Jacksonville in southern Oregon.

In the late 1800's Chinese settlers in the area used the tunnels to work in the old mines and transport gold.

The result of her research was the Christian romance novel "Oregon Wedding" published in 2002 followed by a sequel, "Aggie's Journey" in 2003.

"Aggie's Journey" is similar in genre and appeal to the romance novels written by popular Christian author Janette Oke.

Each character thinks or speaks their thought of faith in a natural way. Tom is currently said to be working on a third book in the series.

Just Past Oysterville: Shoalwater Book One

Author: Perry P. Perkins
ISBN: 1413709141
Reviewer: Jack Cathcart

I bought this book on a whim, as I am familiar with Oysterville and was intrigued by the cover.

The back-cover review reads:
“Just Past Oysterville is one impressive work...it brings to mind the efforts Jesus used in telling the people about God's Truth. He spoke to them in parables. Today, He just might tell them a story of forgiveness quite similar to Just Past Oysterville.”

I totally agree. What a story! This is easily one of the finest Christian fiction works I've yet read. As a long time fan of Frank Peretti, Randy Alcorn and Bill Myers, I will happily be adding Perkins to my short list of favorite authors. Love, hate, loyalty, betrayal, revenge and forgiveness...this book covers the gambit of emotions and leaves the reader exhausted yet satisfied.

Glorious Appearing

Author: Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins
ISBN: 0842332359
Reviewer: Harriet Klausner

Earth has been torn apart as the Anti-Christ, Nicolas Carpathia, has taken control of the world politically, economically, and religiously. Jews have been the victim’s of the Anti-Christ’s hatred and many have been martyred for their beliefs. God’s chosen people are supernaturally protected in Petra while the remaining Jews in Jerusalem try and hold the city against Carpathia’s forces. Fed up with opposition to his regime, Carpathia amasses the biggest army the world has ever seen to kill the remnant in Petra and take control of Jerusalem. The ultimate battle between good and evil is about to take.

This is the twelfth and last book in the Tribulation series and it is the most rewarding tale of all to read because the theme is explicitly and unusually explored. No matter how powerful are the forces of darkness, one knows that the power of goodness will always defeat them. Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins have created a once in a lifetime storytelling extravaganza, one that will be a classic in the years to come.

Oregon Wedding

Author: Cher L. Tom
ISBN: 192860269X
Reviewer: Barbara Sletmoe

I loved this book. This is a fiction book, which falls in the Historical Inspirational category. The setting is in the Applegate Valley at Williamsburg (now called Williams), which is located near Grants Pass, Oregon. The characters are "real" in the sense that you can identify with them. The author included some people who actually lived in the area at the time the story took place. She grew up in the area and knows its history and people, so details are accurate.

Henrietta (Rietta) Kuder was born in Chicago and, through a series of events, was thrust into the Oregon Territory. A man who is obsessed with having her for his wife, a man not above murdering to get his way, is stalking her. When Sam Conner rides into Rietta's life, he brings a quiet faith and commonsense approach to her struggles. However, Rietta must overcome not only her own fears, but the fears of the townspeople who see her as a threat to the community.

The ending is satisfying and leaves the reader anxiously waiting for the sequel, which this reviewer understands, is in process. Note: The author, Cher L. Tom, is the sister of Verdell Jordan who is the pianist in the Grants Pass Apostolic Faith Church. Ms. Tom lives in Colorado.
