The Imitation of Christ

Author: Thomas a Kempis
ISBN: 1565634365
Reviewer: Godfrey Chigozie Ogbo

This book is an ancient devotional that works like a catalyst-it charges the reader gradually, sets you on fire with LOVE for God and love for all men. It debases all forms of materialism and shows the singular, yet indispensable need and urgency of the soul to pursue and be consumed with eternal things. It has the energy of the Spirit to awaken the insensitive Christian who has grown lethargic and carnal by the pressure coming from the world. I never read it without wanting to loose myself wholly and unreservedly in God and be united with Him. It also stresses the need of the soul to achieve what it describes as "Divine Union," after surmounting four hurdles starting from "Awakening"
to "Purgation" before achieving this blessed union with God. Christians of this age will benefit by going back to those fiery devotional writers, who though dead, yet speak.

Studies in the Sermon on the Mount

Author: Oswald Chambers
ISBN: 1572930098
Reviewer: Randy Baltzell

The author covers Matthew chapters 5-7 in verse-by-verse detail and with wonderful insight. It is easy to understand, yet gives the reader so much to dwell on; it is devided into small sections so can be used as a devotional. Throughout the sermon on the mount, there are verses that are well known, and often quoted, but this book takes you deeper, and opens up the treasures of Christ's teachings. A wonderful resource.

Fundamentals of the Faith

Author: Raymond M. Pruitt
ISBN: 0934942218
Reviewer: Karen Barrett

Fundamentals of the Faith is an instructional review of the foundational truths of the Christian faith. Written in a textbook style and quite comprehensive in scope, this is not light reading, but I would consider it a good resource for those who hunger for spiritual knowledge. While the terminology and manner of expressing is different in some areas, it provides a theological basis for major points of doctrine. I particularly enjoyed the section on justification and sanctification. Raymond Pruitt is a theologian of the Church of God of Prophecy based in Cleveland, Tennessee; however, from my evaluation, this book is mostly compatible with Apostolic Faith doctrine. The chapter on the nature and origin of the church (next to the last section) is the point where we would differ most clearly.

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Author: Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancey
ISBN: 0310354501
Reviewer: Al Friesen

This is an interesting, informative book using comparisons between the human body and the Bride of Christ. Dr. Brand's complex study of the functions of cells, skin, muscles, and nerves of the human body are correlated to the spiritual functions of the Bride of Christ. One will appreciate the Creator and will certainly say that we are "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made."

A Right Conception of Sin

Author: Richard Taylor
ISBN: 0834101394
Reviewer: Earl Phillips

I prize this book as one of the best in my library. I would recommend it to all Christians. You hear people ask so often, "Just what is sin?" This book covers it. Sections include: Sin and Theology, Sin and Calvinism, The Atonement and the Nature of Man, The Atonement and a Sinning Religion, What is the Act of Sin, etc. This book was so helpful to me when I first started my ministry. I believe this book is a must read. It comes in paperback.
