Matchstick
Author: Andrew Cocco
ISBN: 1594676844
Reviewer: Drew
In his enlightening novel, Matchstick, Andrew Cocco reminds us all "never to be afraid to do the right thing." When sixth grader Larry Taylor moves to a new town and a new school after his parents' bankruptcy,he faces the challenge of fitting in and the students at Amos Landing School are not very accepting.
In an attempt to win over his classmates, Larry offers to sing the traditional Christmas Solo at the sixth grade Christmas pageant. Larry's decision, instead of making friends, alienated him from his classmates and marked him as an even bigger target for the school bullies who pressure him to back out of the solo.
Now Larry must decide to do what is right even if it is hardest path to take. Andrew Cocco inspires readers with this insightful novel. Matchstick is a must read for kids, their parents, and teachers.

This story is exciting because someone stole Granny Han's money, and she didn't know what to do. She prayed and God answered her prayers. God gave her more than what she needed. I like this book because it's like a mystery.

Hero Tales
Author: Dave & Neta Jackson
ISBN: 1556617127
Reviewer: Likira Arechy
This book is about famous Christians who preached to people in foreign countries and their own countries. Things happened to them, but they didn't give up. Not everybody wanted to listen to what they had to say, but eventually some people did. Some of the Christians almost got killed while they were telling people about Jesus. I liked this book because it helps me learn about different Christians in the past.

Hey, That's Not What the Bible Says!
Author: Bill Ross
ISBN: 0849959225
Reviewer: Amelia Arechy
I like this book, because it has silly pictures. It has lots of Bible stories like Adam and Eve and Noah's Ark. Funny things happen in the stories. In one story, Goliath asks David for his autograph, but then the author fixes it and tells it the right way.

The Christmas Cross
Author: Max Lucado
ISBN: 0849915465
Reviewer: Staff
This is one of those books that gives you a warm, fuzzy, shivery feeling all over.
A mysterious photograph shows up in the mailbox of a man in Chicago. It is postmarked from the town he was born and adopted from 40 years previous.
What he uncovers about a man's drinking problem, a hand-carved nativity scene and forgiveness is amazing. Special pockets in the book accentuate its uniqueness.
This is a picture book for adults and one you shouldn't miss.

Chelsea and the Outrageous Phone Bill
Author: Hilda Stahl
ISBN: 0891076573
Reviewer: Traci Monk
This book is about a girl named Chelsea who is forced to move away from her best friend, Sid. Once she moves, she misses Sid so much that she decides to call her. She knows she shouldn't call long distance, but having a phone in her bedroom is just too tempting. Pretty soon she racks up a HUGE phone bill. My favorite part is how she solves the problem. I really loved this book, and I hope that if you read it, you like it too!

The Beginner's Bible

Reviewer: Karen Barrett
This compilation of stories written for early readers includes 95 Bible stories. You will find, as we did, that all your children's favorites are here: Baby Moses, David and Goliath, Jonah and the whale, the birth of Jesus, and so many more. I liked the fact that the Bible reference for each lesson is given on the first page of each story. This book has a simple style and vocabulary level appropriate for beginning readers, and there are simple, colorful illustrations throughout the book. I found it a great way for our daughter to gain reading experience while reinforcing basic Biblical concepts.

The Beginner's Devotional
Author: Stephen T. Barclift
ISBN: 0945564287
Reviewer: Karen Barrett
This devotional book for children contains 52 units, divided into 13 weekly selections for each of the four seasons. Each unit contains a story for today, overview questions, a paragraph relating it to a familiar Biblical story, a Bible verse, a simple prayer, and fun activities that go with the theme of the story. This is a great resource for family devotional times with young children; it would also work well as a personal devotional for a young reader. I especially liked the inclusion of an index at the back of the book listing the topics and stories covered--this made it easy to locate an appropriate story or unit when dealing with a particular issue with your child. I would highly recommend this as a resource for parents of young children.
