Brooklyn May 2007 Revival

“Do not waste your shadow.” The words still ring out from an evening service held during the May 20-27 revival in Brooklyn, New York.

The Brooklyn pastor, Reverend Robert M. Moore, opened the revival on Sunday morning and spoke about “The Power of a Praying Woman.” Reading from 1 Samuel 1:10-16, he encouraged both old and young women to pray more and to be women of faith. He said that the flesh has to die in order for Christians to walk by faith, and that the key to the flesh dying is prayer. That afternoon the assistant pastor, Joseph Browne, encouraged each one to take advantage of the revival and to ask the Lord to make them over and fill them once again (Jeremiah 18:1-6). He said that when a cell phone is down to its last bar, it needs to be recharged. Likewise, the saints should ask God to recharge them because Christians cannot pour into others if their own vessels are low.

On Monday and Tuesday evenings, there were prayer meetings, and Wednesday evening, the guest speaker, Ene Ekpin, the pastor of the church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, preached. His topic was “Fear Not: Believe Only” (Luke 8:41-42). It was that evening that the saints were admonished to not waste their shadows. He mentioned that Peter’s shadow was a tool that God used to heal people (Acts 5:15). This was but one of the mighty acts of the Apostles, but it, and all the other miracles, were only accomplished as a result of their faith, and lack of fear. Pastor Ekpin explained that fear is not from God and it did not exist in the Garden of Eden when He created Adam and Eve. Fear came because of sin, as evidenced by Adam’s statement to God that he and Eve hid from Him because they were afraid. Fear and faith are two masters and they cannot reign on the same throne. Pastor Ekpin then gave numerous Scriptures on how to cast out fear and said that when the enemy brings fear, one only needs to remember the Word that cancels it out.

The next evening, Pastor Ekpin spoke about love, explaining that faith works by love and that people have to love God in order to believe Him and trust in Him. Strife, however, is a fruit of the flesh that, like fear, has to be cast out. It exists in every relationship and was exhibited even among the disciples (Mark 10:37). The key, however, is this: although Satan will bring strife, the saints do not have to accept it. Strife has to be cast out in order to eliminate confusion and other types of evil so that love can reign (James 3:16; Ephesians 3:17).

On Sunday, Pastor Ekpin closed the revival by preaching from Psalm 133:1-3. He spoke about the importance of love as he explained that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are One in the Trinity because of love. Christians need to have that “God-kind-of-love.” Unity will bring blessing, and it is love, the “God-kind,” unconditional love, that will bring unity. The disciples used only one weapon to evangelize the world around them: the power of unity. These days people still try to evangelize the world, and use billions of dollars to do so, but they leave out the most important thing: unity.

Christians, with God’s help, need to keep these themes in their hearts and minds: to cast out fear and strife, to love one another, to hold on to faith, and to walk in unity. Only then can revival continue in their hearts and minds, even though the revival services are over.
