Easter Activities for Parents and Children

In a society where religion is hardly tolerated, the Easter holiday is associated with rabbits, lambs, decorated eggs, and candy. This poses a challenge for Christian parents who want to impress their children with the true significance of Easter. However, what many people do not realize is that Easter eggs actually have early roots in Christianity. Incorporating the religious history of Easter eggs into the teaching of the miracle of the Resurrection is a good way to get children to remember the true reason we celebrate Easter.

The tradition of decorated eggs began with the people in the Indo-European races, who lived before the time of Christ. To them, it was a startling event to see a new and live creature emerge from a seemingly dead object. Thus, the egg became a symbol of spring’s new beginnings.

Then, after Jesus Christ had been crucified, buried, and resurrected, the egg took on religious symbolism—the rock tomb out of which Christ emerged to the new life of His Resurrection. Because of this interpretation, the egg was one of the forbidden foods during Lent, so people painted the eggs in bright colors of spring, had them blessed, and gave them to friends as Easter gifts. Easter eggs became a symbol honoring the new life of Jesus Christ, and because of their strong Christian beginning, they are a part of the Easter tradition that continues today.

Following are fun and simple activities to teach children the true significance of Easter.
