Home / For You / ![]() God is My Husband God used a hedge to prove to this woman that He would take care of her. By Dee Cummins I really wanted to become a Christian much sooner than I did, but my life was tangled up in a third marriage. My husband was a wealthy man, and he was very good to me. I could not imagine telling him I could not be married to him, but I could not be happy either. I had been raised in a Christian home, and I knew that living in adultery was wrong. Found forgiveness A war in the Middle East made me so afraid the Lord was going to come and that I would be left. Alone in my car on the way to work, I would cry out to God. I promised that if He would help me out of my marriage, I would give Him my life. One day, the Lord spoke to my heart, “You are going to be crying and praying to Me, and I am going to come.” That thought terrified me! At about the same time, my sister sent me some correspondence and a note with the Scripture, “No man can serve two masters.” I knew who I was serving, and I did not like the thought of it. Beside my bed, I knelt and told the Lord that I did not care what happened to me if only He would forgive me. In a moment of time, He mercifully saved me, and He has been helping me ever since. God helped me out of my marriage in a decent, orderly manner. As soon as my husband could find a place to purchase, he moved from my home. Of course he took his tools with him, and it was not long until I realized that I was not too well prepared to take care of my home and yard by myself. I belonged to a homeowners’ association and had agreed to keep my place in good condition. A seventy-foot problem The biggest problem was the hedge that ran across the front part of my property. It was over seventy feet long and very tall. Even if I had the tools to cut it, I do not think I could have gotten up that high. And I certainly could not afford to have it trimmed, since I was on a very limited budget. At that time, I had no one to help me. I knew my husband was watching my life, as were his parents and members of my own family. I did not want them to think that I had made a bad decision when I chose to follow the Lord, so I did the only thing I knew to do, and that was to pray. The more that hedge grew, the harder I prayed. One day I read the verse which says, “For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name.” I felt as if I had found a treasure. I asked the Lord, “Does this mean what I think it means? Does it mean that You will be my husband and will help with things like my hedge?” I wanted and needed that promise to be true in my life. On Christmas morning of that year, I looked out of my dining room window and saw that my hedge was completely cut straight across. It had been perfectly shaped, and there was no leaf under it. I knew that was a miracle and that the Lord had done it for me. I asked around to find out if anyone knew anything about it, but no one did. A second miracle Some months later, I decided to put my house up for sale. Meanwhile, the hedge had been growing, and again, I was so discouraged. Maybe I thought the Lord wouldn’t do a miracle twice. I did not want to be ungrateful for the time He had cut it for me, but I wondered who would buy the home with a hedge in such a condition. The realtor called me one night to ask if he could show my home. As I walked along my hedge to go to the mailbox, a sob came out of my heart, and I told the Lord, “You are still my husband.” The next night, when I came home from work, my hedge was completely cut again—straight across, not a leaf under it. I knew it was another miracle. The Lord had kept His promise to me! My home sold right away, and I have had these years to prove God. He has been a good husband to me. He has certainly kept His part of the bargain. I thank Him with my whole heart. Dee Cummins is a member of the Apostolic Faith Church in Portland, Oregon. |
