Home / For You / ![]() A Note About Music Music adds a great dimension to Sunday school. It can be a fun and inspirational way of teaching and emphasizing the lesson of the week. While there are many things that impact the success of music in Sunday school, one of the keys is the song leader. When a good, enthusiastic song leader is in charge, the singing reflects that enthusiasm. Here are a few tips for song leaders to keep in mind: 1. Make it fun! Music is enjoyable; it makes people happy. The song leader who is clearly enjoying the music and allowing that enjoyment to be seen in his facial expressions and actions will stimulate a similar enthusiasm in the congregation or class. 2. Be positive! An encouraging “Wow, that sounds great!” will do much more to encourage participation than a rebuke such as, “I can’t hear you! Is anyone awake today?” 3. Prepare well. Choose the songs you are going to use in advance. Be sure that the pianist or other accompanist knows what songs you are planning to sing and has any necessary music. Don’t start out and expect them to be able to find the right key and join in! You may wish to select songs that fit in with the theme or lesson of the day. It’s a good idea to also plan what you will say between songs or to introduce the songs. 4. Learn before you lead. Be sure that both you and the pianist know the songs that you are about to sing. If you are teaching a song that is new to your group, know it well before you attempt to teach it to others. 5. Vary your selections. A range of musical styles and tempos keeps interest high. Choose some songs that are fast, some slow, some traditional hymns, some choruses. Introducing a new song can also maintain interest. 6. Don’t forget to pray! When you pray for God’s blessing on Sunday school, don’t forget to ask for His help and blessing on the musical part of your program. God’s Spirit empowering you will make you an effective song leader, to His glory.
