Other Gospel
“But
though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto
you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
– Galatians 1:8
One day
when I was about four years old, I fell asleep on my parents' bed,
one of my favorite spots in our little cabin by the peat moss swamp.
It was probably my dad's voice that woke me, but I was not ready
for the furry object that flew through the air and landed on my
body. Dad had tossed his fur hat through the air and onto the bed,
but I did not know it was only a coonskin cap. It looked like a
real animal to me! I screamed hysterically, fearful that I was being
attacked by some wild beast. My dad felt badly and took me up in
his arms and showed me how harmless the cap was. It just was not
what it had appeared to be.
How often
things are not what they appear! In our focus verse, Paul expressed
amazement that people who had once embraced the true Gospel were
later persuaded to follow a false doctrine. As they followed that
false way, what appeared true to them was really not truth at all.
Unfortunately, their mistake did not cause them alarm—just the opposite,
it created a false sense of security. The deception of false teachings
often makes people feel safe when they are not.
The world
today offers many “gospels” that are not the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Those religions are manmade; some have a mystical being to worship,
a list of rituals and rules to follow, or claim that salvation comes
from within man himself. Such ideas occasionally appear good at
first, perhaps encouraging honesty, responsibility, and other fine
values. Yet, in speaking of Jesus, the Bible says, “There is none
other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”
(Acts 4:12). Thus, any gospel other than the Gospel of Christ is
empty; it is not what it appears to be.
There is
only one true Way, and we must be vigilant to make sure we are not
deceived. Many have been tricked into following some man's idea
of an easier road to Heaven, but that does not have to happen. The
grace of God appears to all men, and it can do a real work and keep
us until we arrive in Heaven. Today, let us take time to thank God
that we have been blessed to hear and receive the true Gospel. With
grateful hearts, let us treasure this great gift.
