Featured Branch:
Los Angeles, California

The great Azusa Street revival of the Latter Rain Gospel began in Los Angeles in April 1906. Reverend L. Crawford, one of the moving factors of that revival, felt the call of God to establish headquarters in Portland, Oregon. Her first service was held in Portland on Christmas Day, 1906, and the headquarters of the Apostolic Faith Mission of Portland, Oregon, was established during 1908. The spirit of evangelism radiated from this headquarters location from the beginning, and branch churches were established almost from the start.

The Azusa Street group was soon torn by different factions and ceased to function as a church. However, a nucleus of the group still held to the fundamental truths of what had been taught at Azusa Street originally. This remnant in Los Angeles turned to the Portland organization for leadership and direction. They began to worship in rented buildings, wherever a suitable location could be found. The Portland headquarters would send ministers and help from time to time as was needed.

The World War II years found a lively Apostolic Faith group worshipping in a rented building at 347 South Hill Street. This was an oasis for the many young men and women who were serving in the armed forces of our country in southern California. Many found opportunity to obtain a pass, leave their units on Friday evenings or Saturday morning, enjoy the spiritual fellowship and services on Sunday, and then return to their units in time for duty Monday morning. It was an interesting time for the church group too, having so many visitors from different parts of the United States in their services.

After the war rental buildings became more expensive and harder to find, so the church group began looking for a church building to buy. A suitable location was found at 12th and New Hampshire, with dedication of this edifice being observed April 19, 1946. This location served admirably until the area filled with immigrants from areas of the world who were not interested in the Christian religion.

In March 1971, the congregation moved to 2333 Fletcher Drive, and the church was dedicated on March 28, 1971. This also is a two-story building with sanctuary, prayer room, music room, Sunday school rooms, Pastor’s office, nursery, and rest rooms on the main floor. In the basement are located the kitchen, Sunday school rooms, rest rooms, storage/tool room, church office, and a large open area used for Sunday school, church gatherings and activities. At the time the church was purchased, some remodeling and painting were done. The church rents the parking located next to the church from the Department of Water and Power.
