A Good Soldier

"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds."
- 2 Corinthians 10:4

Every army has its code of conduct, which is expressed as commands, orders, or instructions. The United States Army has two major types of orders: general orders and special orders. It is mandatory that each soldier memorize all of the orders. Everyone, without exception, learns all of the general orders because of one special order: No one may receive a pass or leave until he can recite all of the general orders.

Of course, all the orders are very important. They help soldiers to be prepared for dangerous situations that may arise and to react in the best possible way. I remember the first one: “To walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on the alert and observing all that takes place within sight or hearing.” When everyone follows their orders, things go more smoothly and military objectives can be accomplished efficiently.

As Christian soldiers, God has given us “general orders” in the Bible. Psalm 37 contains four such orders:

  • Trust in the LORD and do good.
  • Delight thyself also in the LORD.
  • Commit thy way unto the LORD.
  • Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently.

In Matthew 5:44 we find another set of orders, which tells us how to walk among enemies:

  • Love your enemies.
  • Bless them that curse you.
  • Do good to them that hate you.
  • Pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.

The Captain of our salvation has made our orders very simple. When we observe them faithfully and consistently, we put ourselves in the best position for God to use us to accomplish His will. How important it is to study His Word to know exactly what our orders are! Then each of us can be in our place, doing our part, helping to accomplish God’s objectives.

Our weapons are “not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.” The more closely we perform the orders of our Commander, the better equipped we will be in spiritual battle.

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.”
- Revelation 12:11
